About

My name is Theodore (Theo) Knell. I am an ex-British Special Forces soldier who saw action all over the world during my 22 years service in the military.

My new book “A Hell for Heroes” is due to be published by Coronet, an imprint of Hodder and Stoughton later this year. It is a collection of short stories and poems covering the period from my early childhood up to the time I left the British Army and my return to a somtimes traumatic civilian life. Although it portrays the people and events that either shaped or coloured my life, I hope that anyone who reads it will find some sort of connection with their own. It gives snapshots of the first forty years of my life concentrating mainly on the twenty two years of my military service, most of it spent with Special Forces.

For those of you that have not been so blessed to serve, or cursed, depending on your perspective, I hope it will provide you with a brief insight into the life and mind of a professional soldier. What makes us the way we are, what drives us on when lesser men would fold, what binds us together like no other brotherhood on earth, what makes us laugh and what scares us shitless.

Although I could fill half a dozen books with events from just my military career, I thought it was important to include parts of my childhood, as this is where the seeds of what we are, and what we will become are sown. I have tried to share my experiences honestly, some so dark and painful that I often questioned whether I wanted to remain part of this thing they call the human race.

Take care

Theodore

    Dear Theo,
I am a final year University student, and am planning on joining the Army after graduation. I am currently in the process of writing a dissertation on the importance of talking about the experiences of war and PTSD, particularly looking at war poetry. I would love to include some of your work, and was wondering if possible whether I could ask you some questions via email about your experiences.
    Many Thanks, Emily Leyshon
